IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

provide 64-bit addressing capability for CICS applications

The customer's C/C++ applications get to a size where they urgently need 64-bit addressing support within CICS. The customer's requirements are focused on how existing CICS applications could benefit from 64-bit adressspaces without being modified. They recommend an implementation that is based on CICS subspace technique.
The requirement in more detail is:
- CICS applications should run in subspaces within a 64-bit address mode adressspace
- each subspace of this kind should have a max of 2 GB
- Transaction isolation is required (because of subspace design)
- there should be an address virtualization mechanism in CICS that ensures that the application (running in a subspace) can use
virtual storage ranging from 0 to 2GB
This design would have 2 major advantages:
- each transaction has 2 GB available for its own
- existing applications do not have to be changed.
Some of the problems the customer suffers today with the 31-bit addressing limitation in CICS are:
In the production environment the load modules get to a size that would require multiple CICS regions in parallel. However, the CICS ISC communication produces significant overhead that adds to CPU cycles and SW-license costs, as well as additional administration work.
In the development environment one major problem is that IBM Debug Tool adds additional resource requirements to the application programm being debugged. In consequence they just cannot debug their programms in a proper way.

Whilst this requirement is valid, based on our current plans and priorities, it is not likely that this could be implemented in the next 12 months, or in the next CICS TS release. Correspondingly this requirement is being declined at this point. The requirement will be kept in the RFE system and might be reassessed in the future. You also have an opportunity to resubmit in twelve months time if you wish it to be reconsidered then.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Transaction Processing
    Product - CICS Transaction Server

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - WebSphere
    Product family - Transaction Processing
    Product - CICS Transaction Server
