Add 64-bit CICS Explorer for Linux

Currently,IBM CICS Explorer for Linux is 32-bit only. If running a "pure" 64-bit Linux operating system (OS), such as "Slackware for the x86_64 architecture", or Slackware64 for short (see http://www.slackware.com/), the current CICS Explorer for Linux will simply not run as it tries to run a 32-bit executable "cicsexplorer". Optional 32-bit support can be added to an OS such as Slackware64 (see http://connie.slackware.com/~alien/multilib/ for an example), but this can cause installation, maintenance and security issues.

Note that the same problem exists with the IBM CICS Information Center (IC) for Linux, as it is 32-bit, but a circumvention exists where one can create a symbolic link to a local 64-bit Java jre directory and the IC will run successfully. Also, in the case of IC, it is invoked with a simple shell script, allowing this particular circumvention (hack).

So an option with the CICS Explorer for Linux is to change the ./cicsexplorer 32-bit executable to a shell script to allow something like the above circumvention to work.

Probably preferable to build both the CICS Explorer and Information Centers with pure 64-bit builds, but CICS Explorer is most urgent to get "fixed".

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Transaction Processing
    Product - CICS Transaction Server

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - WebSphere
    Product family - Transaction Processing
    Product - CICS Transaction Server

This requirement has been re-evaluated. Looking at current plans, it is not likely that this would be implemented in the next two CICS TS releases, so correspondingly this requirement is being rejected. You have an opportunity to resubmit in eighteen months time if you wish it to be considered then.

64bit Linux support will not be able to be provided by the next mod level release of CICS Explorer, it is projected to be included in the next full release. For the time being the requirement will be moved back to uncommitted candidate status.

One technique that might be easier for now than the shell script technique, is to get a 64 bit Linux download of Eclipse from http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-ide-java-developers/heliosr - and then add our update site http://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/htp/cics/updates/portfolio/5.1/5.1.0/ - select IBM CICS Explorer (extend an Eclipse installation) - and install the IBM CICS Explorer v5.1.  What this will do is install the CICS Explorer plugins into the 64 bit Linux Eclipse environment.
Although we don't release a 64bit Linux CICS Explorer downloadable - we do support the CICS Explorer SDK installed into the 64bit Linux Eclipse (supported platforms are listed here http://www-01.ibm.com/software/htp/cics/explorer/requirements/) as as long as it is 3.6.2 (which is the link I pasted above - helios is a codeword for 3.6.2) - If you need to use 3.7 the URL for the download site is http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-ide-java-developers/indigosr2.

The requirement for a 64 bit Linux version of Explorer is something we are looking to address in the near term. The RFE is being moved into 'Planned for Future release' status.  Please note:
