CICS tran dump threshold

System: CICS 4.2
Actor: CICS programmer

CICS currently allows us to set the TRDUMAX system initialization parm to specify the limit on the number of transaction dumps that may be taken per Dump Table entry.

Description:
Program testing sometimes causes continual abends that produce tran dumps of multiple dump codes. This excessive dumping can affect performance of other regions on the same CPU. We should be able to suppress transaction dumps of ALL codes after a certain threshold is reached. This means there should be another system initialization parm to specify the limit on the AGGREGATE number of transaction dumps that may be taken. Ideally, we should also have an alerting system that will tell us when a certain percentage of the threshold has been hit.

This RFE is satisfied by APAR PH34348 available on CICS TS 5.6 together with the latest CICS Explorer 5.5.0.17 which is now available for download.

Rather than a SIT parameter a new policy system rule has been created which can be used to set a threshold for the total number of transaction dumps taken by a region. When the policy is triggered you have the policy action options of either a message being issued, or to invoke an EP adapter. You can write an EP adapter to use the existing SPI to browse all existing trandumpcodes and use the SET TRANDUMPCODE command to set the maximum number of dumps to zero for example, to stop further trandumps for those dumpcodes..

An alerting system when you are nearing the limit can be achieved by having multiple policies installed with different threshold values.

Setting existing dumptable entries does not preclude new dumpcodes being added which will have the TRDUMAX value for its maximum setting.

An alternative strategy could be to have a low value for TRDUMAX, so that all trandumpcodes are limited, but to use the policy to set a higher maximum value for particular dumpcodes should conditions allow it.

This is something we would like to address. The RFE is being moved into 'Planned for Future release' status. Please note:

This requirement is being re-opened, for consideration in a future release

We have assessed this requirement. We have no current plans for this to be implemented and so this requirement is being declined at this point. The requirement will be kept in the RFE system and might be reassessed in the future. You also have an opportunity to resubmit in twelve months time if you wish it to be reconsidered then.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Transaction Processing
    Product - CICS Transaction Server

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - WebSphere
    Product family - Transaction Processing
    Product - CICS Transaction Server

This is a candidate for inclusion in a future release. It may be something we can address via the new threshold policy mechanism.
