CICS TS and ThreadSafe

Our customer suggested that CICS should have a trap for non threadsafe commands (if it doesn't already have). For instance: if a program issues an OPEN, READ, DISPLAY COBOL command, CICS should abend the transaction and send a ABEND CODE indicating the error. The Getmain, LOAD, use of CWA or VSAM datasets should have the same treatment.

This could be optional for the installations that don't want these special commands being used under CICS.

Normally these commands issue SVC to MVS, so it can be easily implemented by not allowing SVC in the CICS environment.

This requirement has been evaluated. It is not something we are likely to implement so correspondingly this requirement is being rejected. Even if it were possible to run SVC screening code in CICS (and its not clear if this is possible without having abig detrimental effect on performance), it would not solve the problem. Some MVS services use PC or indeed branch and link. So it would not solve detecting use of non CICS commands. Secondly even if you could detect use of non CICS commands that is still not going to be able to inform the user if their program is threadsafe. A program might not use MVS services, but if it updates shared storage without the necessary serialisation logic in place, then the program will not be threadsafe.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Transaction Processing
    Product - CICS Transaction Server

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - WebSphere
    Product family - Transaction Processing
    Product - CICS Transaction Server

This is a very good suggestion. So we could also convince our customers mor easily to implement their programs as threadsafe.
