This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Rather than a NOWAIT option on RECEIVE, an alternative is to be able to determine if receivable data is present before issuing a RECEIVE. This is possible with an enhancement made in CICS TS 5.3 so this RFE is being Closed and marked as Delivered.
In CICS TS 5.3 we added an EXEC CICS ASSIGN INPUTMSGLEN command.
In the KnowledgeCenter it is documented as:
INPUTMSGLEN(data-area) Returns a halfword binary length of the terminal input string, in bytes. If there is no terminal input data, a length of zero is returned.
Hello John,
I think that just might fit the bill, that is if it works like I think it will. What I'm looking for is a way for an application program to avoid the undesirable ZCIOWAIT conditions that result from attempting to fetch terminal data when there are none currently present.
Hi Robert,
In CICS TS 5.3 we added an EXEC CICS ASSIGN INPUTMSGLEN command.
See this RFE https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewChangeRequest&CR_ID=35212
In the KnowledgeCenter it is documented as:
INPUTMSGLEN(data-area) Returns a halfword binary length of the terminal input string, in bytes. If there is no terminal input data, a length of zero is returned.
Does this fir the bill ?
Regards,
John Tilling
If judged too difficult to deliver in the near future, then also helpful would be a new API call (or a new option on an existing API call such as perhaps ASSIGN or EXTRACT) that an application program could employ to determine if "receiveable" data is present at the current time, the idea being that if no data is currently available the program could avoid the ZCIOWAIT condition that would occur.
