Using return codes in the way described is not really a practical solution to the potentially many varied reasons that may or may not occur during CICS termination and which situations would result in a particular value of return code. This would make the decision by automation products extremely difficult and complex in how they would determine what action to be taken and what information they may need in order to effectively and accurately decide in how the next run of CICS should be executed or what other process(es) may need to take place.The messages issued by CICS, and other products, are the most effective and complete way of communicating the CICS workload status and activity during CICS shutdown and they are what should be used to determine how you might want to restart CICS.
