When generating the commands (batch and foreground) for a comparison (DSM function) when key synchronization is requested with an old and new copybook or template, provide a list of fields from the old copybook that can be used to select the key(s).

This eliminates the manual process of identifying the start location and length of the key fields.  It also makes the $$FILEM control cards more "readable" since the copybook field names are used.  The end user would more likely understand the key field names rather than the start location, offset and field types.

Suggested implementation:

When a keyed  comparison with copybooks or templates is being generated by the panels, instead of providing the panel  FMNPDSM4, provide a list of all fields for the old copybook/template. The user than could identify the fields by commands such as AK (Ascending key) or AK1-AKn, Ascending key 1-n.    If the field names match the new copybook/template, then use this information to generate KEYFLDOLD, KEYFLDNEW and KEYORD fields. If the field name is not found in the new copybook/template, then provide a list of fields in the new copybook/template to select to match to the old copybook/template.
