This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

The algorithm / code generated by Rational Developer for z Series to convert incoming XML data to COBOL numeric data types is inefficient.
This is my understanding of the generated inbound (XML to COBOL) XML converter code:
1) Whenever the converter encounters a numeric element, it goes through a process of calculating the number of valid numeric characters in the XML content. This is done using a INSPECT REPLACING code which is not very efficient and so INSPECT CONVERTING construct should be used instead to make it faster. The code is repeated for different lengths but can be done in a single INSPECT statement.
2) Next the converter tries to search for a matching element in the NPSA array. If it finds a match, then it maps the content to a linkage section element and then moves the data to the COBOL data element.
3) If there is no match in the NPSA array then the converter uses the NUMVAL-C function to convert the numeric data.

Per conversations/correspondence, the INSPECT REPLACING will not buy sufficient performance improvement. With agreement from the customer we are closing this RFE and awaiting a new RFE if new analysis from the profiling tool show new data.
Customer response:
I will get some more numbers from the profiling tool and open a new RFE if required.
This RFE is consistent with our strategy and product roadmap and IBM is continuing to evaluate.
