Implement line length limitations for the Compare Editor.

Currently the Compare Editor will allow you to compare two files with unlimited line length and save it. This can be a problem when working on line limited Cobol source programs. If you take an 80 character line limited Cobol program and compare it with a second file that contains longer lines, then you can merge and save the Cobol source with an invalid line length. There is no warning or error reported, We are requesting that a setting be added to control the line length of files when using the Compare Editor. This feature exists in the Cobol and PLI editors already.

Yes, the warning should appear in two indicated scenarios when the option "Enable maximum line length" is set.

Thank you for submitting this Idea. Though not directly from the comparison view, there's a setting in Preferences > COBOL > Editor > Save Actions, and "Enable maximum line length". When enabled, it will popup a warning when the parser detects that there are lines that exceed 80 (or the length specified) and then ask to truncate those lines with a Refactor view preview. Once that file has been truncated, then a comparison can be made between two files without carrying over lines that exceed 80.

Or another similar path is to do the files comparisons first. Then in the destination file, save with the setting enabled to get the line lenth warning.

    Will either of these work?
