IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Empty <PROGRAM> tag in VS Code remote preprocessor XML when editing remote dataset members

When Z Open Editor invokes a remote preprocessor script (e.g. FEKRNPLI) via RSE while editing a remote dataset member, the tag in the XML written to the temp dataset is empty.   The preprocessor REXX has no way to identify the input source member to pass to the compiler, making remote preprocessing non-functional.  This issue occurs when the remote dataset does not contain COBOL, CBL, PLI or PL1 in its name as mentioned in the documentation.

This request for enhancement is to allow other dataset names to be used aside from the documented ones.  Sometimes datasets contain a mix of different source code types such as COBOL, PL1, and Assembler which makes naming the dataset with one of the documented names problematic.   The language detection capabilities in z Open Editor does correctly identify the source code type in the mixed source dataset, so the remote preprocessing tooling should be able to use this information and populate the <PROGRAM> tag correctly.
