IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

RDz cannot correctly generate a copybook from a BMS file created using a repeating vertical structure in

Symptom

A BMS file was created using SDF II on the host. They repeated a block of the format using the REPEAT n panel command on the Define Fields panel of SDF II. SDF II maintains an internal metadata where it stores information on such a structure. The generated BMS file however, does not contain the necessary information to determine that there is a repeated structure.

The Rational Developer for System z BMS editor can access only the BMS source. Therefore, the editor is unaware of this repeat structure and treats each field as individual array fields. Hence the generated symbolic map also has the individual array fields instead of the repeating structure as a whole.
Cause

Copybooks that are generated by the Rational Developer for System z do not correctly layout the panel since the BMS editor does not know of the repeating fields in a vertical structure. Copybooks that are generated by the BMS editor will also not correctly define these structures.

Remark
This problem is also described in technote 1433740 the resolution however is not acceptable for some of my customers.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Programming Languages
Product - Developer for System z

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Rational
Product family - Design & development
Product - Developer for System z

This RFE is consistent with our roadmap and is being considered for delivery in the next 2 year time frame. Thanks.

After discussions with Tom Principaal, it was clarified that RDz does indeed support the repeat blocks created by SDF II and also generates the symbolic map correctly, in most cases. The limitation referred to by the above mentioned technote is no longer a limitation as of RDz version 8.0.2.

The only known case where RDz does not have support for is the case where the repeat block contains one or more arrays inside of it. In such a case, the generated symbolic map is incorrect and the array fields are being treated as normal fields.

This support has not been included in RDz yet and so an RFE has been recommended.
There seem to be at least two known customers who have maps containing repeat blocks of arrays.
