Logging of DLI Batch Jobs With DBRC Information

Our organization uses IMS DB as the core of various systems. We do regular backups and change accumulation processes. We've had 2 recent instances where a particular database got corrupted or damaged and needed to restore this database. We went thru the normal procedures to restore this database (Restore Backup, Change Accumulation and Online Logs). The restore job completed normally, but the database was corrupted. We broke down the restore process to determine that the full restore was fine but as soon as we restored the first log file, the database was corrupted generating U0840 errors. After intensive investigation and research, we discovered a single DLI batch job that had its DBRC flag set to N and was writing its IEFRDER log entries to a DUMMY DD. That particular job was actually in place for 8 years prior to the first database corruption. Due to that missing log dataset, the log chain was broken, and we were unable to successfully restore this database. We would like to see an SMF record type that can record step attributes for a DLI step, including the DBRC Flag, PSBNAME, the IEFRDER dataset and the IEFRDER2 dataset and any other relevant information. This information would be instrumental to identifying jobs that may not be configured properly and are actually doing updates to a database.

    Hi ,

Thank you for your interest in keeping IMS a vital and successful product. Software development has continuously evolved during IMS's lifetime, and so has IMS itself. We have kept pace with, adopted, and implemented many industry standard best practices within our organization, including Continuous Delivery, Design Thinking, and Agile.

When choosing new features to add from the list of requirements in our backlog, we assess which will bring the most value to as many clients as possible and prioritize those.

After reviewing this request for enhancement and assessing its potential value, our decision is to add this item to our backlog. Items in our backlog are expected to be delivered within the next 18 months. We reserve the right to re-prioritize our backlog items as new requests come in. This helps ensure that we are constantly focused on providing the best value to all of our clients.

    Have a great day!
