Deletion of IMS resource definitions on AUTOEXPORT to the IMS repository

IBM has announced AUTOEXPORT feature for the IMS repository as part of the new functions of IMS version 14. AUTOEXPORT will be only supported for new and updated resource definitions but not for deletions. To delete a resource from the repository you must explicitly issue a DELETE DEFN command, because IMS repository supports multiple IMS installations and the same resource can be defined in more than one installation but may not be deleted in all.

A better way to handle this may be to mark resources deleted for a specific IMS Installation during the AUTOEXPORT process and to automatically delete the resource from the IMS repository as soon as no IMS Installation does need the resource definition anymore. That ensures, that no resource definition change is not done to the IMS respository and no resource definition of a deleted resource will be imported during AUTOIMPORT on a cold start again because someone forgot to issue the DELETE DEFN command.

    Hi Robert

Thank you for your interest in keeping IMS a vital and successful product. Software development has continuously evolved during IMS's lifetime, and so has IMS itself. We have kept pace with, adopted, and implemented many industry standard best practices within our organization, including Continuous Delivery, Design Thinking, and Agile.

When choosing new features to add from the list of requirements in our backlog, we assess which will bring the most value to as many clients as possible and prioritize those.

At this time, after reviewing this request for enhancement and assessing its potential value, we have decided to reject it. The reason we are rejecting RFE 73545 is the following: We don’t feel we can deliver it within the next 18-24 months which is the goal we have set for RFE deliverables as part of our IMS Gold program. Another reason is that we might have some customers that want to use the command because they want a more controlled environment.

We appreciate your input to IMS, and we hope that you will continue to submit ideas for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of IMS.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Deepak Kohli - deepakk@us.ibm.com
