Enhance the IMS SQL batch utility and the IMS DDL generation batch utility

At the moment the only way to execute DDL statements on z/OS is to run the IMS SQL Batch Utility. This utility is using the IMS Universal JDBC Driver to connect to IMS Connect and executes the DDL statements through ODBM. This forces you to setup IMS Connect and ODBM to be able to execute DDL Statements in the case you haven't already setup both.

For being able to connect with IMS Connect you need to specify a RACF user ID and a password in clear text within the connecting URL the JDBC driver uses, which isn't acceptable in production environments. Instead of RACF user ID and password RACF PassTickets can be used, but enabling PassTicket support in IMS Connect may have negative implications on existing IMS Connect applications.

If the SQL Batch Utility could be executed in a JBP region neither a setup of IMS Connect and ODBM would be necessary nor a RACF user ID and password respectively a RACF PassTicket needs to be provided.

The same problems applies to the DDL Generation Batch Utility, which allows you create DDL statements from either IMS Catalog metadata or DBD and PSB sources, in the case you decide to use the IMS Catalog as the metadata source for this utility.

In general such important utilities should be better native utilities like the other Catalog utilities to make their adoption as easy as possible.

    Hi Robert,
Thank you for your interest in keeping IMS a vital and successful product. Software development has continuously evolved during IMS's lifetime, and so has IMS itself. We have kept pace with, adopted, and implemented many industry standard best practices within our organization, including Continuous Delivery, Design Thinking, and Agile.

When choosing new features to add from the list of requirements in our backlog, we assess which will bring the most value to as many clients as possible and prioritize those.

At this time, after reviewing this request for enhancement and assessing its potential value, we have decided to reject it. We think it’s a great idea but we are rejecting RFE 129933 for the following reasons:
    1) The enhancement is a DDL related enhancement and right now our focus is on IMS Managed ACBs.
    2) We will not be able to get to this enhancement within 18-24 months which is the goal we have set for RFE deliverables as part of our IMS Gold program.

We have put this enhancement on our future roadmap for DDL.
You are welcome to resubmit this RFE at a later date if you like but we have noted it for our futures roadmap.

We appreciate your input to IMS, and we hope that you will continue to submit ideas for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of IMS.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Deepak Kohli - deepakk@us.ibm.com
