This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Configurable timeout and improved handling for DB sensor IMS calls during ORF processing

During high system activity, IMS Database Reorganization Expert (ORF) jobs may fail due to a fixed 30‑second timeout in the DB sensor module when issuing IMS calls (e.g. during CRSS processing).

In real production scenarios (large environments, frequent IMS cycling, heavy load), IMS responses may legitimately exceed this hard-coded timeout, causing ORF jobs to fail with connection or timeout-related errors (e.g. BBECRAPI), even though IMS itself is healthy.

The IMS Database Reorganization Expert should handle IMS response delays during high system activity in a more resilient and configurable way.

Preferred behavior includes:

Configurable IMS call timeout

  • Externalize the DB sensor IMS call timeout (currently fixed at 30 seconds).
  • Allow configuration via parameter, profile option, or environment setting so customers can tune it based on system size and workload.

Adaptive or retry-based handling

  • If an IMS call times out due to system load, automatically retry the request a limited number of times before failing the job.
  • Introduce controlled backoff or wait logic instead of immediate failure.

This is a great idea!  Why has no one thought of this before?
