End-to-End Transaction Tracing from containerized service through DataPower to Mainframe (IMS)

With the industry’s focus on SRE it is critical to be able to trace an application transaction from the frontend application, through DataPower, to the various SoR(s) on the Mainframes. OpenTelemetry is a new standard allowing technical users to trace information and messages moving throughout a complex IT environment involving many different platforms. Having this capability would greatly benefit American Express, as it would allow them to trace cardmember transactions moving through processing in AMEX's systems (e.g. new request coming in as HTTP message into DataPower appliance, being sent via MQ message to z/OS, being traced throughout CICS and IMS, and then being sent via MQ message into the distributed (cloud & x86) environments). Specifically, AMEX are interested in leveraging the Trace-ID (Span Context) from the incoming HTTP header and inserting that ID into the backend MQ message, and then subsequently into the CICS and IMS transaction headers.

The Span Context info should also be logged and sent to a collector, for future use and analysis and to allow the user to trace a particular transaction back to a particular customer journey.
