IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

IMS JAVA to honor POSIX signaling

POSIX standards allow users to signal to processes. This signaling capability might be honored by the UNIX runtime itself or propagated to the middleware on top of the Unix implementation (or thread). Typically: USS kill -n is the used user-interface to signal in direction of a Unix process. The JVM itself is supposed to consume certain signals and act accordingly, e.g. terminate or take a dump. z/OS USS is POSIX conform and supports signaling capabilities. The IBM JVM is certified to behave according to the defined standards. Therefore, one can signal in direction to an IBM JVM under z/OS/USS and ask for termination or dump processing.
Problem: IMS JAVA runtimes (at least classic IMS MPP Regions/BMP Regions) do not honor USS kill at all or not in a timely or predictable manner. It is requested that all IMS JAVA implementation do honor POSIX signaling according to standards or intercept (e.g. thread termination after warning) and act appropriately. It would be helpful if the Posix signaling could be wrapped in IMS
/MOD jobname,HEAPDUMP
Or MVS modify commands, e.g.

MODIFY IMSA,jobname,HEAPDUMP

Implementing via OPER command would also allow to control user authorization more granular (dump or terminate might require different authorizations)
It is understood that JAVA dumps could be extracted from SVC dump of the dependent region. This makes problem determination to complicated and does not implement e.g. signaling for thread termination.

    Hi Holger Wunderlich,

Thank you for your interest in keeping IMS a vital and successful product. Software development has continuously evolved during IMS's lifetime, and so has IMS itself. We have kept pace with, adopted, and implemented many industry standard best practices within our organization, including Continuous Delivery, Design Thinking, and Agile.

When choosing new features to add from the list of requirements in our backlog, we assess which will bring the most value to as many clients as possible and prioritize those.

At this time, after reviewing this request for enhancement and assessing its potential value, we have decided to reject it. The reason we are rejecting RFE ID 93517 is because given our current priorities we cannot in good faith get to this within 18 months. You are welcome to resubmit this RFE at a later date and we will reconsider.

    Thank you.
