Provide real time indexing for z/OS sequential datasets

I'm not sure which workspace is appropriate - please help find a home for this?

We generate terrabytes of log and SMF data every day, but much of it is hard to retrieve because of the amount of data. Could we have a splunk like model of indexing on mainframe datasets? For the datasets that are identified to the indexer, include a list of fields to be indexed, such as col 1 to 10 is the date/time, etc. The application/subsystem is not aware of indexing, so no modifications to them. The indexing happens asynchronously. Then when someone wants to access a particular portion of a large file, they can enter the search predicates via JCL. Again the reading program would not know as the parameters are in JCL:

//IN DD DSN=DAILY.CICS.LOGDATA,DISP=SHR,

// SUBSYS=(INDX,’search predicates’)

I know this is much more complex than it seems. As you pull "records" out of their context, there could be problems - for example, how to pull a single CICS transaction from a block of SMF records. As I've heard many times, the devil is in the details!

    Hi @Michael - thanks for submitting this Idea. After investigation, this does not fall under the scope of the ZLDA team. Can you please re-submit this under the "IBM Z Operating System: z/OS" workspace? If you are unable to do that, I can ask to see if we can have the Idea the moved.
