PL/1 align Left / align Right Functions

I have seen the new functions in PL/I 5.1/5.2 for inserting characters behind and befor a string (LEFT,RIFHT). First a thaught this would be functions to align a string in an variable storage, because this is what I am searching for, but when I tried it the function works different.

What I need is a function to align a string in a variable storage.

DCL STR CHAR(20) INIT(' hello'); <- two blanks in front of hello

alignleft(str) -> should result in 'hello'
alignright(str) -> should result in ' hello' <- 15 blanks in front of hello.

If I take the left function blanks in front of the hello are not removed ... or I am doing something wrong.

Simple function for simple result.

trim( x, ' ', '' ) will left justify the string for you (where the second argument is a char(1) holding a blank and the third argument is a null string)

switching the second and third arguments above will right justify it

Note that there are two required arguments and a third optional argument for the LEFT and RIGHT functions.

You can use TRIM to left justify the string, or the LEFT function.

You can use the RIGHT function to right justify the string.
