Workspace PL/I Compilers

Better compiler output on missing or superfluous "END", ")", ";"

I still sometimes miss or add one too much "END", ";" or ")".
Those typos are really hard to find in large programs as the compiler in most cases only provides e.g. a "the END statement has no matching BEGIN...".
I'm aware that PL/I as a language and the compiler provides a great freedom of choices how programs are structured and this might make detection of structure-mistakes hard, but any improvement in the detection of missing or superfluous DO, BEGIN, END, (, ), ; would be an improvement.

    With the 5.3 release, the compiler will report statements with mismatching ( ) and with mismatching (: and :). If more messages are desired for other cases of this kind of user error, please open a separate RFE for each of them. That allows us to do them (and to do the ones that matter) over time rather than having an RFE that stays open forever because it is too open ended.

    But please do open RFEs if you find an error that you wished the compiler had reported more clearly.

    a ")" too much might lead to hard to detect compile errors

    this could be very useful, but it make be a somewhat gradual process to make it better and better

    use case 1: a missing ")" is not detected but leads to not very helpful compiler errors far below:
    ...
    select(some_func(with, some, parms, 1); /* omg, i missed a ")" */
    when(0);
    otherwise;
    end;
    ...
