Create and maintain an IBM-supported fork of PyInstaller with z/OS support, bundled with IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Python, to enable standalone executable creation on mainframe systems.

IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Python lacks a critical capability available on other platforms: the ability to create standalone executables. PyInstaller currently supports Windows, Linux (x86/x64/ARM), and macOS but lacks support for IBM z/OS mainframe systems running on s390x architecture. This limitation prevents mainframe developers from creating standalone Python executables, forcing them to either ship source code or rely on complex deployment procedures. Adding z/OS support would enable:

  • Standalone executables that bundle Python runtime and dependencies
  • Simplified deployment across z/OS LPARs without Python installation requirements
  • Code protection through compiled distribution
  • Reduced dependency management for mainframe Python applications
  • Parity with other platforms for enterprise Python development

This would significantly benefit organizations running Python applications on z/OS mainframes, particularly for data integration, automation, and modernization initiatives.

Request IBM to:

  • Evaluate PyInstaller fork feasibility
  • Include in future Open Enterprise SDK roadmap
  • Provide timeline for potential implementation
