IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

EGL/RUI is consuming unnecessary memory from the browser. We need an automatic garbage collection process just like in Java..

To manage memory consumption in EGL/RichUI applications, you have to either reuse widgets or destroy widgets 'manually'.
Reusing widgets makes software unnecessary complex postponing memory issues in larger apps.
Manually destroying widgets is time consuming on both development- and runtime.

We are convinced this should not be the developer's responsability and these practices do not match IBM's presentation of EGL being a high level programming language. In Java and Java script garbage collection is an automated process.

Ideally, EGL/RichUI generated code should automatically cut links to objects which are no longer needed, and enable the js-garbage collection to release / destroy these objects automatically.

Suggestion: it is common practise to append and remove children to parents. Could these actions be a good starting point to trigger this process?

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Programming Languages
    Product - Business Developer

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Rational
Product family - Design & development
    Product - Business Developer

We agree that this would be a valuable feature, and it is consistent with EGL's philosophy of shielding the developer from the underlying complexity.

Doing the analysis to determine which objects are no longer needed will be quite complex, so
