IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Move the Workload Global Table Array (WGTA) above the 2Gb bar

As the system use grows the WGTA keeps getting bigger and since this is in 31 bit addressable memory below the 2Gb bar at some point we will either have to either sacrifice some other use of 31 bit memory or move it above the bar.

This is somewhat complicated as the WGTA is an old part of the system and most of the applications that reference it are 31 bit assembler segments that we would prefer not to have to modify.

As well as the IBM WGTA fields we have implemented a number of other bytes, indicators and switches in the WGTA and we have also moved printer support too.

To mitigate against the complications of the WGTA, many years ago we implemented a program AAIU which is used by applications to get a copy of the WGTA slot instead of the WGTA slot itself, the copy slot can be updated e.g. to turn AAA in use indicator and AAIU can write it back to the WGTA. AAIU was designed as an abstraction layer for the WGTA to stop any misuse or mistakes from causing harm that would require a WGTA Build to repair. In general applications are not allowed to code a WGTAC call directly however IBM programs and our own middleware programs do call WGTAC directly.

At the moment I consider this low priority as the WGTA was expanded only a couple of years ago.

Idea priority Low

The z/TPF lab is unable to move forward with this idea unless more benefit versus risk information is provided for moving the WGTA above the 2Gb bar. If it is determined that there would be enough benefit to justify spending lab and customer resources on this, the idea can be reopened or a new idea can be opened.

Please respond to the TPF lab's 2025-09-03 request for additional information by 2025-10-21.
We need to know if there is enough benefit to implement moving the WGTA above the 2Gb bar considering the potential risk involved.
    Thank you.

Before the z/TPF lab can move forward with this idea, please let us know if there is enough benefit to implement moving the WGTA above the 2Gb bar considering the potential risk involved.
