IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

SCTP (stream control transmission protocol) support for zTPF

our member endpoint platforms and CISCO equipment in the network currently support SCTP. They feel this protocol would make the network more resilient to carrier issues to endpoint connections. They are currently performing a POC with SCTP connections.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - z Systems Software
    Product - z/TPF

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - WebSphere
    Product family - Transaction Processing
    Product - z/TPF

z/TPF has no plans to implement SCTP. Most platforms, including z/OS, have not implemented SCTP either because it is not transparent (applications and middleware changes required to use it) and/or because the benefits of SCTP can be achieved today using existing technologies (such as VIPAs and multiple sockets).

If the customer is concerned about network issues (any node other than the socket endpoints), SCTP is subject to the same lost packet potential as any other protocol (TCP, UDP, and so on) that uses IP as the transport across potentially unreliable networks.

An application using an SCTP connection with multiple streams is the same as an application using multiple TCP sockets. In either case, the application has to choose with logical path (SCTP stream or TCP socket) to use for a given message and if any packet using that logical path gets dropped by the network, delivery of subsequent messages along that path are delayed.

Supporting SCTP would be a fairly large effort with no technical benefits over technology already supported.
