IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Global Symbol Reference (originally V06005F)

TPFUG_Req_Number: V06014F
Contact Originator Id: kirtisri.samarasuriya@sabre-holdings.com
Abstract: TPF Toolkit Debugger Global Variable Symbol feature should be enhanced to support the return and display of a Reference String for each Global Symbol List Item.
Description: Current TPF Toolkit Debugger Global Symbol Support enables a list of pointers to be returned and displayed. The display consists of the Global Symbol Name, the Item Index, and the Pointer Value (address) for each item of a Global Symbol returned by the TPF Resolving Function. For example, this may be a list DECB addresses or a list of TPFDF File Control Item (SW00SR) addresses.

The returned/displayed Pointer Value itself does not identify a specific item to a user nor is it the programmed (code) identifier. For example, in the case of a DECB item the DECB Name and/or File Id information is necessary. In the case of a TPFDF item the File Reference Name and/or File Id information is necessary.

In order to identify a specific item, the user is required to map memory at each returned list item pointer and locate the relevant identifying information. This process is time consuming when it needs to be repeated for multiple list items at each debug step over multiple debug sessions.

Identifying information needs to be displayed along with the pointer value so that the desired item(s) can be selected directly without the need to examine all items where a Global Symbol returns a List of Pointers.
Solution Considerations: The TPF Resolving Function described above must be able to setup and return an item specific string for each Global Symbol Item and the TPF Toolkit Client must be able to display the String returned for each Global Symbol Item alongside the Pointer Value.

The TPF Resolving Function can assemble necessary identifying information within the returned string for each item.

IBM believes that the idea is unsound and does not recommend implementation by either IBM or end users and/or the idea is counter to future directions.
