FCTB Analysis for Capacity Planning

TPFUG_Req_Number: D95008
Contact Originator Id: Rick Long
Abstract: FCTB Analysis for Capacity Planning
Description: Under TPF 4.1 there is no convenient way to track usage of fixed records or the
program area. Being able to track this usage on an ongoing basis is crucial to
forecasting future use and planning fixed file expansions. We need an offline
utility that will read the FCTB source and provide a summarization of

(1) In-use versus total amount allocated for the program area;
(2) in-use versus total amount allocated for each fixed record size for the entire system broken out by SSU; and
(3) total amount allocated for each pool type.

We also need an option to produce listings for the entire complex and broken down by SSU of each fixed record ID, the record size, and number of records allocated. The TUG Data Base Subcommittee added that in addition to the above we would like to have the next available set of UFT's for each FTI listed.
Alternative Solutions: It might be possible to alter the FCTB generation process so the summarization data resides within the FACE table itself; the summarized numbers could possibly then be displayed via functional entry in the TPF system with minimal system overhead. The option to display allocations by record ID within SSU would probably be best left in the offline environment.
Solution Considerations: It is vital to be able to see how much of the fixed record area is in use. I was stunned to find out such a basic requirement had been overlooked in TPF4.1; it is comparable to buying a Cadillac and finding out that it doesn't include a gas gauge. Without knowing how much fixed space is available capacity planners are unable to provide well planned fixed record expansions necessary to allow system growth and application development.
