RANGE functionality for CRUISE

The CRUISE package currently provides controls to govern the number of concurrent ECBs the utility is allowed to run with. During this year's Herndon stress test we observed that despite increasing the number of concurrent ECBs for the utility, runtimes remained unchanged. Reviewing the number of active ECBs reported by the utility, we did not see what was reported reflect what was requested. Despite the ECB increase, we saw negligible differences in IO rates/CPU sustained from the utility. Further scrutiny of the utility showed very high ECB create rates.

CRUISE currently schedules a new ECB for each fixed file ordinal in the database it is processing. After discussion with the lab the consensus was that CRUISE could not schedule the requested number of ECBs quickly enough since each child ECB was completing so quickly.

The Recoup package currently provides RANGE functionality to process n number of fixed file ordinals per each child ECB. We would like to see similar functionality implemented in the CRUISE package as we believe this should alleviate the behavior we saw in Herndon.
