This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Collect transaction level performance data and correlate with trace for mainframe CICS transactions to help problem diagnose

Transaction level performance metrics data, like CPU consumption, file locks, or DB2 package information, for a CICS transaction are the most of key metrics during a problem determination use case. Collecting these kind of data and correlate with Instana trace can provide greate value for mainframe operations team. These performance metrics data are already stored in SMF on z/OS, consider to leverage CDP for the data streaming and let zAPM Connect to make the data correlation with trace may be able to provide this function.

We would like to provide additional and more concrete customer context for this request.

A Proof of Concept (POC) has already been completed for both Instana on z/OS and Instana for Open environments at this customer.

The POC validated Instana’s technical feasibility and value across distributed tracing and hybrid observability scenarios.

The customer’s clear strategic direction following the POC is to:

    • Use Instana as a unified observability platform across both Open systems and z/OS
    • Consolidate tools and operational processes where possible

    Current situation:

    • Dynatrace is currently used only on z/OS
    • Instana is positioned to cover both Open and z/OS environments

The customer has explicitly indicated that they are willing to replace Dynatrace on z/OS and fully standardize on Instana, provided that Instana can deliver summarized mainframe CPU consumption (from SMF) aggregated across all JDBC calls to Db2 on z/OS at the front‑end request level, with the ability to sort and analyze by this total CPU time in the Instana UI.

From the customer’s perspective, this capability is not optional, as it is required for:

    • End‑to‑end transaction visibility across Open and Z
    • Accurate mainframe CPU cost attribution and governance
    • Identifying high CPU‑consuming transactions that may not be visible through response time analysis alone

    Important considerations:

    • The CPU data for individual JDBC calls is already collected via SMF and sent to Instana today
    • No additional mainframe data collection or overhead is required
    • The remaining gap is primarily within Instana analytics and UI‑level summarization

Without this capability, Dynatrace cannot currently be decommissioned on z/OS.

With this capability, full standardization on Instana becomes possible.

This customer scenario is representative of other large enterprise z/OS clients who are actively evaluating tool consolidation across Open and z/OS environments.

    This enhancement therefore represents:

    • A validated post‑POC customer adoption blocker
    • A direct competitive displacement opportunity against Dynatrace
    • Increased Instana adoption as a hybrid Z + Open observability platform

We strongly recommend reconsidering this request based on the above POC‑validated customer intent, competitive impact, and commercial value.

This is a long-term aim, however it will be unlikely to be worked on until 2024
