Suport for IBM CCSID 1379 (Traditional and Simplified Chinese Characters)

There is constant request over a couple of years for this CCSID to be supported for our businesses in Hong Kong. Appreciate if you can consider adding this support as soon as possible.

The idea is for both provider and requester use case.

On top of Citi’s request to IBM to support CCSID 1379 in our WAS servers, please help confirm whether CCSID 1379 (both mainframe and WAS servers) will also be enhanced and aligned, or new CCSID will be provided to support what HK government has published in terms of what characters should be supported in the near future.

As per Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set (ccli.gov.hk) published by gov, logically HK will require Han (CJK – Chinese, Japanese, Korean) which add more complexity; see HKSCS-2016 standards

We are aware that one solution is for the applications to support UTF-8 in mainframe but doing this is considered an open-heart surgery in all mainframe appl’ns. So we are looking at a solution that can be handled at CCSID level…

    Hi Nina,

The start of the document for the link you provided mentioned about supported code page:

Refer to Coded character set identifiers to check whether the code page that you want to use is supported in z/OS® Connect by default. Specify a custom CCSID only when you have a specific requirement for it.

Does this mean that this facility only works with supported code pages, and since CCSID 1379 is not in the list of supportable code pages, we cannot use it?

    Kindly confirm. Thank you

    Hello,
Thank you for raising this Idea. Is this for a Provider or Requester use case?
We do support custom CCSIDs: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zos-connect/zosconnect/3.0?topic=properties-how-specify-custom-ccsid-cics-service Would this be a solution?
    Thank you.
