MFA for z/VM in-band authentication

The MFA solution for z/VM would be more effectively integrated into customer environments if it offered in-band authentication similar to its counterpart on z/OS. On z/OS, the MFA code operates as a started task (STC), interfacing directly with RACF memory-to-memory, which simplifies compliance and audit justification and requires no additional overhead for corporate infrastructure integration. In contrast, the current MFA for z/VM runs in a separate Linux Guest with a GUI and RADIUS interface, but its login process and TOTP code retrieval are not user-friendly. Because it operates on a different OS and as a separate guest, it must be introduced to the corporate application environment as an independent product, unlike the seamless integration with RACF and the OS on z/OS. The presence of a UI and system administrator login capabilities means it requires separate scrutiny, resulting in extensive paperwork that, since 2022, has made deploying MFA for z/VM at Citi unfeasible.
