CICS Explorer - Self Protect against issues with the File Open Feature

Currently if a user opens certain files (ie: MS Office .xls, .doc, etc.) via the CICS Explorer File Open Option CICS Explorer will lock up to the point where the user must Open Task Manager and Kill CICS Explorer.

CICS Explorer workspace corruption issues have often also resulted from the necessary Task Manager Kill.

We have assessed this requirement. We have no current plans for this to be implemented and so this requirement is being declined at this point. The requirement will be kept in the RFE system and might be reassessed in the future. You also have an opportunity to resubmit in twelve months time if you wish it to be reconsidered then.

One further comment; I understand that this is an eclipse bug and that your options for fixing it are limited. Thanks Again, Lisa

    Hey Dave,

Thanks for this. We will be going through another packaging cycle soon. I'll give your suggestion of the plugin.customization.ini file code change a try.

I would say that even if this works for us, it would be beneficial if the results of opening a file via the feature were not as negative as they are now. An error would be preferable to CEX locking up to the point where it has to be killed via Task Manager, or corrupts a user workspace.

    Thanks Again, Lisa

Just to add that if you wanted to add the preference to your plugin_customization.ini then the line to disable that tickbox would look like this:
    org.eclipse.ui/DISABLE_OPEN_EDITOR_IN_PLACE=true

Just tested it out for you because I thought that'd be your next question :-)

    Hi Lisa,
Speaking to the Explorer team, the File>Open is triggering some Eclipse code that handles Windows OLE which is what we think is hanging. So we think it is an eclipse bug, rather than an Explorer bug, not that you care which, I realise you'd just like it fixed. There are a number of Eclipse bugs relating to OLE which suggests it's a problematic area. The Eclipse 4.4 release notes (https://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/development/readme_eclipse_4.4.php) acknowledge bugs in the area of OLE which may lead to crashes.

Given that we can't fix it ourselves, we do however have a suggestion for avoiding the problem by disabling OLE editing as follows:

In Explorer, change the configuration as follows: Window > Preferences, General > Editors and deselect "Allow in-place system editors". This will, for example if you open a .doc cause it to use Microsoft Word rather than use Eclipse.
    Would this help ?

    Regards,
    John Tilling
