Enterprise COBOL - Compilation directive >>MESSAGE to produce a message with a severity level

It would be useful to have a compilation directive to trigger a message with a severity level that would be rendered on the Compile Listing and that would also control the general return code of the compilation.

This directive would only be enabled in the "true" branches of the ">> IF" / ">> EVALUATE" compilation directives.

This directive should also be able to include compiler variables to set the product message.

The syntax of this directive could be:

>> MESSAGE CODE message-code MESSAGE message-text SEVERITY message-level

with:

- message-code: an alphanumeric literal identifying the message

- text-message: a text describing the message, with inclusion of compilation variables in a form to be defined (prefix, special delimiters ...)

- message-level: severity of the message according to the standard 'I', 'W', 'E', 'S' modifying the general return code of the compilation with the usual values 00, 04, 08, 12.

    Hi Denis,

Thank you for your recent update. We will take it into consideration when we reassess this idea.

    Hi,

I would like to re-enable this request as it is a "must have" in the context of using conditional compilation.

Indeed, conditional processing can detect cases where it is necessary to stop compilation, or just give a warning.

Without this development, it is impossible to intervene in the compilation process or to report alerts effectively.

Upon rereading, I propose the following syntax:
    >> MESSAGE CODE "message-code" TEXT "message-text" SEVERITY "message-level"

    Sample:
    >>MESSAGE CODE "MYMSG0001" TEXT "You had a problem." SEVERITY "E"

Which would produce the following diagnosis:

    LineID Message code Message text

    1234 MYMSG0001-E You had a problem.

IBM Enterprise COBOL for z/OS is a continuous delivery offering, and aims to satisfy the needs of a rapidly evolving market segment. Product strategy evolves and requirements are continuously evaluated against that strategy. This RFE has recently been reappraised against the wider product strategy and does not fall into IBMs delivery plans for the next 12 month. Whilst this RFE might be valid and we might look to deliver longer term, this RFE is being rejected at this time. The requirement will be kept in our internal RFE backlog and might be reassessed in the future.

This is a valid RFE and is being accepted. This RFE will be updated once put into plan.
