User-Defined Functions in Mainframe COBOL

The mainframe COBOL compilers support the use of intrinsic functions through the use of the FUNCTION keyword, e.g., in the MOVE statement. Examples:

MOVE FUNCTION CURRENT-DATE TO CUR-DATETIME.
MOVE FUNCTION LOWER-CASE(EMAIL-ADDRESS)
TO EMAIL-ADDRESS.
MOVE FUNCTION UPPER-CASE(BANK-NAME)
TO BANK-NAME.

Well, I would like to see the ability to reference user-defined functions as well. In addition, I could really use user-defined functions that were able to return not just data values but a Boolean value, as well, and both able to be used in not just MOVE statements but also in IF, EVALUATE WHEN, and PERFORM UNTIL statements -- to name a few expanded usages.

We are accepting this hRFE as we plan to implement locally user defined functions. Won't have boolean value datatype though. This RFE will be updated further once put into plan.
