Enterprise COBOL V5+ - TEST(dwarf, source) option violates *CONTROL NOSOURCE directives

When the *CONTROL NOSOURCE / *CONTROL SOURCE directives are used in a source code, the lines present between these two directives are excluded from the compilation listing. However, if the compiler option TEST(dwarf, source) is activated, then the lines normally excluded from the Listing are present in the source code included in the dwarf section. So the dwarf section includes the source code and not the listing. This can present a security problem by disclosing information that one does not wish to restore. This can be checked by requesting the display of the source code contained in the dwarf section with the dwarfdump utility and the -zt option.

Hi, we have reviewed this idea and it is working as designed.

There is no connection between CONTROL NOSOURCE/SOURCE and TEST(DWARF). CONTROL NOSOURCE/SOURCE controls what gets put into the listing. The code excluded from the listing still needs to be included in the source we put into the DWARF, or otherwise you would not be able to debug the program using DWARF. The MDECK will also include that code.

As a result, we are rejecting this Idea.

This Idea is being investigated further in conjunction with Idea COBOLVUE-I-353 and will be updated once we make a decision.
