Allow JSON PARSE WITH DETAIL to be set on or off at runtime

JSON PARSE WITH DETAIL ON/OFF

It would be helpful if WITH DETAIL can be enabled/disabled at run time by application logic.

The WITH DETAIL phrase displays too many messages in job output. Many of the messages are expected conditions for many applications (eg. IGZ0324I JSON array with name JSON-name at offset <offset> had fewer elements than the matching table item). This is especially challenging in a Batch program processing many instances of the same JSON document. It can take much time to find which messages are for the JSON document that failed.

Possible solution:

WITH DETAIL <data-name>

Where data-name references a variable that contains a value such as YES/NO; ON/OFF; TRUE/FALSE; T/F; Y/N

A Blank value would be interpreted as False or No.

In this way, when a JSON document fails to parse properly (according to error handling decisions in the application), the data-name variable can be set ON and the exact same parse statement re-executed to display the detail for this single JSON document.

Current work around is to code the exact same PARSE statement twice; once omitting WITH DETAIL, and once WITH DETAIL. Error handling executes the one WITH DETAIL when needed. This is risky due to needing to maintain two exact copies of code and ensure they are kept up to date with changes. It is very likely the WITH DETAIL copy will Not receive all the same code changes.

IBM Enterprise COBOL for z/OS is a continuous delivery offering, and aims to satisfy the needs of a rapidly evolving market segment. Product strategy evolves and requirements are continuously evaluated against that strategy. This Idea has recently been appraised against the wider product strategy and does not fall into IBMs delivery plans for the next 12 month. Whilst this Idea might be valid and we might look to deliver longer term, this Idea is being rejected at this time. The requirement will be kept in our internal Idea backlog and might be reassessed in the future.
