A site we support had users that retired and the IDCAMS DEFINE JCL could not be located. The VSAM KSDS had multiple Alternate Indexes too. The new users were not trained in IBM VSAM so they have no knowledge on creating IDCAMS Control Cards. I had to review the LISTCAT output to manually create the Control Cards needed to do the DEFINEs etc. I think it would be a nice feature for File Manager to have the ability to generate the Control Cards that a user can use to generate a foundation template. Then the user can then SAVE the Control Cards and, if need be, make necessary adjustments for disk space, tuning, etc. as needed. Or build a New and Different VSAM file using the existing parameters for testing etc. Providing the Control Cards as a foundation can come in handy for novice and experienced users.

    The capability to produce IDCAMS definition statements for existing data sets exists in the product already.

    From FM 3.4 if BATCH execution is selected and a fully qualified VSAM data set name is specified then the DEF command will bring up a panel and then generate JCL with the VSAM IDCAMS statements.


    Also you can produce VSAM define statements for one or more existing data sets by using the DEFV batch function - an example follows:

    //FMBAT EXEC PGM=FILEMGR               
    //SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*                 
    //FMNDEFV  DD SYSOUT=*                 
    //SYSIN DD *,SYMBOLS=JCLONLY           
    $$FILEM DEFV ,                         
    $$FILEM DSNLIST=(myhlq.**.PATH,        
    $$FILEM myhlq.KSDS,                    
    $$FILEM myhlq.**.AIX)

    This job will produce the IDCAMS definitions for all the data set names that match the DSNLIST specified to the DD FMNDEFV. In this case its goes to the spool. The SE line command could be used to edit and save the values - or it could be changed to a data set name. Either way this funtionality is existing.
