IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Display attributes of temporary datatypes

By some operations, a temporary datatype is generated:
Language Reference "Operational expressions":
>The operands of an operation in a PL/I expression are converted, if necessary, to the same data type before the operation is performed.

But this (temporary) datatype is not visible on the compilerlisting.
Please let the compiler show that datatype(s) in the Listing.

Example Source:

SKY0281: PROC OPTIONS(MAIN);
/*=-----------------------------------------------------------------=*/
/* INTERNE DATENKONVERSIONEN SICHTBAR MACHEN */
/*=-----------------------------------------------------------------=*/
DCL B_VAR1 BIN FIXED(31);
DCL B_VAR2 DEC FIXED(11,2);
DCL B_VAR3 DEC FIXED(11,2);

B_VAR1 = 5;
B_VAR2 = 4;
B_VAR3 = B_VAR1 * B_VAR2;

PUT SKIP LIST('4*5>'!!B_VAR3!!'<');

END SKY0281;

Actually from the Compiler Message, we see in this example the temporary datatype:

5655-W67 IBM(R) Enterprise PL/I for z/OS SKY0281: PROC OPTIONS(MAIN);
Compiler Messages
Message Line.File Message Description
IBM2819I I 11.0 Multiplication of FIXED DEC(10,0) and FIXED DEC(11,2)
may raise FIXEDOVERFLOW.

so it is DEC FIXED(10,0).

    This would be a useful feature, and it has been requested by other customers as well
