IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

JSON pass-through support in z/OS Connect EE

Modern COBOL compilers and Java are supporting JSON processing in mainframe applications, but z/OS Connect EE is currently limited to field-based messages. Please add the support to pass-through JSON data in both request and response in z/OS Connect EE. Please do not limit this support to full messages, but also support JSON data in specific fields of field-based messages.

    This requirement is addressed by z/OS Connect V3.0.55 / APAR PH43628: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/apar/PH43628
The capability to pass through JSON to COBOL is now an available option (map top level object to a large COBOL field or CHAR container)
For further details refer to the “ Mapping your API and z/OS Asset” topic in the z/OS Connect OpenAPI 3 Documentation:
    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zosconn/zos-connect/3.0?topic=designer-mapping-your-rest-api-operations-zos-asset

The capability will extend to the IMS z/OS asset when it is delivered.

I already signed up for this program in the past, because I am closely working together with the IMS lab on lots of system and application modernization topics. I added z/OS Connect as area of interest for this program.

While I can understand, that mixed copybook / JSON messages are challenging to handle and so will be a long-term item, a pass-through of full JSON messages for Java applications running for instance under IMS should be an easier thing to do. It would be good if you could provide this as a first part of the solution earlier.

    Thank you for this RFE.

This is a strategic requirement that is part of our long term roadmap. As part of our future roadmap we investigating "functional mapping". This would allow you to map entire JSON objects to string fields in copybooks. In the simplest sense this would allow a program interface to be defined as a single large string field and for a mapping to map the top level JSON object to/from that field.

Delivering this requirement will need some careful design consideration and may take some time to deliver. We are currently seeking participation in our design program to help us develop our initial designs. If you are interested in joining us on this journey to shape the delivery of this capability, please sign up to the Z Client Feedback program via the link below, indicating your interest in z/OS Connect EE:
