Automated data validity checking for Packed Decimal items

IBM should provide a compiler option similar in function to ZoneCheck but for Packed Decimal items. This should check both the validity of data in the sign nibble (as compared to the item's Picture clause) and should also verify that all other nibbles contain valid numeric digits. Unlike zoned decimal items, the processing and results of packed decimal items with invalid data has remained relatively stable across IBM COBOL products, versions, and releases. However, the rules of COBOL (both in the Standard and the IBM LRM) do not guarantee that the results will remain the same in the future. What today causes an ABEND may cause incorrect results in the future and vice versa. If application programmers had a facility similar to ZoneCheck for detecting such invalid data today, they could take appropriate coding action to avoid such unpredictable results in the future.
