A new compilation option (rule) DISPLAYCHECK is required

Dear Madam/Sir,

In the frame of ensuring enhanced code quality, we would like to implement a new COBOL compiler option (rule)  so an error or warning to be issued in case of existing DISPLAY statements in a program. The new parameter could be DISPLAYCHECK (or DC) while the default value could be NODISPLAYCHECK (or NODC). In addition, the COBOL message exit IGYMSGXT should be used to change the severity of the compiler message due to DISPLAYCHECK.

The solution is important to be implemented as it will mitigate the risk of system unavailability due to excessive DISPLAYs in JES2 spooler.

    Hi,

    I suggest to add an action and a level of sévérité to this future compilation option:

    • trigger an information: severity 04, compilation success (if no other error)

    • trigger a warning: severity 08, compilation success but compilation procedure can stop (no linkedit/bind to create a loadmodule)

    • trigger an error: severity 12, compilation fail, no OBJECT created

    DISPLAYCHECK(INFORMATION|WARNING|ERROR)

    Hi, you can achieve similar debugging line functionality by coding a D in column 7 of your program. Please consider using this as a solution and let us know your thoughts. More info can be obtained via the link below:
