z/OS Connect 3.x support of Kerberos

As part of a Proof of Concept for outbound connectivity form z/OS to distributed platforms, Morgan Stanley is evaluating the capabilities of z/OS Connect EE v3.0. Our primary use case is to enable COBOL programs running under z/OS batch to invoke distributed RESTful JSON web services implemented on Windows and Linux on x86 platforms.

Our standard authentication method for http based services is Kerberos using SPNEGO and our fallback method is mutual authentication using x.509 certificates. It is important to note that our audit and control requirements include end-to-end identification and accountability for all requests made from client to server.

Currently, z/OS Connect does not support Kerberos as an authentication mechanism for outbound connections. As this is critical to meeting our security needs, we request the following enhancement to z/OS Connect:

•    When operating in outbound mode, provide the following:
o A means to lookup Kerberos credentials representing the identity of the requesting batch job which is running under a RACF id.
o A means to present those Kerberos credentials to web services over http/https connections using SPNEGO as a mechanism.”

Whilst this requirement is valid, based on our current plans and priorities for IBM z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition, it is not likely that this could be implemented in the next 12 months. Correspondingly this requirement is being declined at this point. The requirement will be kept in the RFE system and might be reassessed in the future. You also have an opportunity to resubmit in twelve months time if you wish it to be reconsidered then.
