Enterprise Cobol V5/V6 - New compilation directive ">>RULES(ON|OFF)"

In addition to RFE 120105 (http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=120105), I suggest implementing a ">>RULES(ON|OFF)" compilation directive to enable / disable controls related to the "RULES ()" compilation option :

- >>RULES(OFF) disable RULES() controls from this line

- >>RULES(ON) activate RULES() controls from this line

By default, the RULES() controls are active until a >> RULES(OFF) compiler directive is encountered.

This directive would make the source contained in COPYBOOK insensitive to RULES() declared in a program, or source parts that we do not want to modify to comply with these RULES().

    IBM Enterprise COBOL for z/OS is a continuous delivery offering, and aims to satisfy the needs of a rapidly evolving market segment. Product strategy evolves and requirements are continuously evaluated against that strategy. This RFE has recently been reappraised against the wider product strategy and does not fall into IBMs delivery plans for the next 12 month. Whilst this RFE might be valid and we might look to deliver longer term, this RFE is being rejected at this time. The requirement will be kept in our internal RFE backlog and might be reassessed in the future.

    ISO Cobol 2014 supports ">>PUSH directive" and ">>POP directive" to save and restore status of compilation directives.

    The state of compiler directives may be saved and restored with PUSH and POP directives. A “stack” is maintained
    that the state of a directive may be pushed on to. A subsequent POP directive removes the item from the stack and
    restores the state of the directive to that when it was pushed.
    NOTE The PUSH/POP sequence is especially useful when using COPY to introduce text that contains directives
    that may already be specified earlier. Changing them in the added text may be overridden by a subsequent POP
    directive so the remaining source text behaves as if the changes were not made.

    Alternatively, we could consider a couple of directives ">>RULESPUSH" and ">>RULESPOP"
    - >>RULESPUSH saves the current state of the RULES, which can then be modified by >>RULES(options)
    - >>RULESPOP restores the state of the saved RULES by >>RULESPUSH

    This would allow for example COPYBOOK to set up their own RULES without affecting those of the program referencing the COPYBOOK
