IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Index shared by multiple tables

It can be useful to be able to access the same position in a synchronized way in several tables.
In this case it is necessary to use an indice (numeric data item) that is independent of each table.
However, for performance reasons, it is best to use indexes (address offset to item in a array) to access items in a table, but an index can not be shared by multiple tables.

We propose to create the notion of index shared by several tables:
- at the Cobol source level, only one "logical" index is manipulated
- at the binary level, the "logical" index is actually a vector of "physical" index consisting of as many values as there are tables that share this "logical" index
- "SET index" instructions at the Cobol source level modify each value of the vector "physical" index

This RFE is being rejected because is not compatible with any COBOL Standard implementation.

We require more time to investigate this RFE.

At binary level, a field containing the current row number (indice) can be associated with the vector of index.
This field can be used in statements involved in comparaison between index and decimal values.
