This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

IMS Support for VSAM Linear database Buffer pools 64 bit addressable

Support for VSAM LINEAR datasets for IMS databases was delivered for the enhancement for databases dataset encryption in 2020. The buffer pools for VSAM LINEAR datasets are still treated like OSAM buffer pools with 31 bit addressability. Anthem has a very constrained IMSPlex with 4 production IMS regions in the plex. 2 for transactions and 2 for BMPs. Currently we can only allow 5 MB of free virtual storage 31 bit addressable without having to reduce the buffer pools and decrease performance. This is a large HALDB environment with most transaction and BMP PSBs referencing the larger HALDBs. The IMS DB application teams have been in progress of converting DLI batch jobs to BMPs but the progress is slow due to lack of virtual storage available for larger buffer pools and OSAM SB so performance will likely suffer.

Some statistics on the virtual storage break down is below:

Extended private region is about 1380 MB

The IMS DLI region allocates 1216 MB for user subpool storage requirements of which 862 MB is for OSAM and VSAM buffer pools. The region also allocates about 93 MB for ELSQA storage leaving about 70 MB available or slightly more than 5% of extended Private.

The 862 MB of buffer pool storage is about 62% of the extended Private region

The 862 MB of buffer pool storage is allocated as 91% OSAM and 9% VSAM

Our buffer pool hit ratio is about 98.6% suffering about 19,000 read I/Os per second

Conversion of the large OSAM HALDBs to VSAM LINEAR would be worth while if the buffer pools are allocated in 64 bit addressable storage.

    Hi,
Thank you for your interest in keeping IMS a vital and successful product. Software development has continuously evolved during IMS's lifetime, and so has IMS itself. We have kept pace with, adopted, and implemented many industry standard best practices within our organization, including Continuous Delivery, Design Thinking, and Agile.

When choosing new features to add from the list of requirements in our backlog, we assess which will bring the most value to as many clients as possible and prioritize those.

At this time, after reviewing this request for enhancement and assessing its potential value, we have decided to reject it. The reason we are rejecting RFE 86897 is this item is not strategic to our roadmap - the goal we have set for ourselves is to deliver RFEs within 18-24 months of the submission. You are welcome to resubmit this RFE at a later date and we will reconsider.

We appreciate your input to IMS, and we hope that you will continue to submit ideas for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of IMS.

    Sincerely,
    Deepak Kohli – deepakk@us.ibm.com
