Trace parms should have option to be dynamically changed via IMS commands

Some problems may require a trace in order to see the problem details. Depending upon the required trace different trace parms may be required. In order to change the trace parms a subsystem recycle may be required requiring a service impact. In order to solve a service impact another service impact needs to be scheduled. In our immediate case IMS Connect requires to be recycled, impacting a high availability application that is already experiencing service impacts. IMS should provide commands to dynamically change trace options for services such as IMS Connect.

    Dear Gied Jankaitis:

Thank you for submitting this IMS enhancement request.
After giving the request a comprehensive review, we have determined that we cannot include it as a candidate in an upcoming release because it is not consistent with the product purpose. As a consequence we have, unfortunately, rejected this request.
BPE and IMS already do provide commands to change most trace parameters. In BPE, you can use the UPD TRTAB command to set the trace volume (NONE (off), ERROR, LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH), and you can turn external trace on and off (and the external trace data set definitions can be added on the fly if they were not there at initialization, using the OPTION(REREAD) parameter). In IMS, you can use the /TRA SET command to turn traces on and off, and to turn external trace on and off. The size of the trace tables is set at initialization, we cannot change that.
In this described case - if the BPE trace tables already had a reasonable number of pages, the UPD TRTAB command still have been used to activate them at their current sizes. If they were too small, then external trace could have been used to capture the trace data (although that does risk losing entries if the volume is too high).

We appreciate your input to the IMS development team. We also hope that you will continue to submit ideas for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of IMS.

    Sincerely,
    Poonam Chitale
