IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Dynamic resizing of IMS buffers

Actually a dynamic management is only possible for IMS database buffers, but this would be helpful for a lot of other buffers as well in the case you have defined upper limits for these buffers to prevent a z/OS system from storage problems caused by IMS application or system problems. Especially buffers that are being used for the different types of communication that can be used to interact with the IMS Transaction Manager are good candidates for such an enhancement.

    Hi Robert Recknagel of FI-TS,

Thank you for your interest in keeping IMS a vital and successful product for many more decades. Software development has continuously evolved during IMS's lifetime, and so has IMS itself. We have kept pace with, adopted, and implemented many industry standard best practices within our organization, including Continuous Delivery, Design Thinking, and Agile.

When choosing new features to add from the list of requirements in our backlog, we assess which will bring the most value to as many clients as possible and prioritize those.

At this time, after reviewing this request for enhancement and assessing its impact, we decided to reject it. The following reason is our justification for rejecting this RFE: given our current priorities we cannot in good faith get to this within 18 months.

If you would like to rally for more votes to have this reconsidered, and/or if we get more requests in this area, we can reconsider our decision in the future.

    Have a great day!

    Hello IBM,

now we are running in our environments with limiting some pools.
    One point is ECSA usage.

    DFS1929I * PSBW = 1228800

Here we are running with a upper limit. PSBW stands here representative for all pools which can be restricted by defining upper limits in the DFSPBxxx PROCLIB member.

Now we have a pool usage of 10% to 20% and a high usage of 77%.
In some situation, deadlocks, loops or what ever we are running in a out of storage situation.
Stop of system activities. Nothing is come to end.

    Question/RFE:

We need a warning at 80% usage and a way to change temporary this upper limit.
Or a storage safety buffer of maybe 10% for must complete threads before we run out of storage.

    Best regards

We need more specific information on your request.
It is not clear to us exactly what you are requesting.

What specific pools or limiting controls are you asking about?

Can you provide any PMR numbers about such incidences, or any other correspondence or information from the resilience study you mention
(and was there anyone from IMS present so that we can work with them)?

Are you just looking for a way to temporarily raise upper limits (by command?) and then set it back down again?
