This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Enhance IRLM to detect cross-subsystem deadlocks

Today the Internal Resource Lock Manager (IRLM) of IMS is not able to communicate with the IRLM of DB2. This causes cross-subsystem deadlock situations not to be detected and not to be resolved.

Because such cross-subsystem deadlocks could not be detected by IRLM, such situations result in one to many lock timeouts in IMS and/or DB2. This is not an efficient handling of cross-subsystem deadlocks, because

> even if the lock timeout definitions of both IMS and DB2 are short, unnecessary long waits arise from this (which causes IMS or CICS applications not to be processed as fast as possible and more side effects on other applications),
> lock timeouts can hit a lot of applications even if they are not causing the cross-subsystem deadlock,
> long chains of lock waiters could arise and result in very long processing times, application timeouts, high queuing and application abends (in such situations the cross-system deadlock continues even if the initial causers are not active anymore, automatic re-scheduling of transactions makes this even worse)

Please enhance IRLM to be able to detect and quickly resolve such cross-subsystem deadlocks. They could be caused by IMS transactions / BMP applications with both IMS and DB2 database access or CICS transactions with both IMS and DB2 database access. They could also be caused by applications with both IMS and DB2 JDBC access and DB2 Stored Procedures also accessing IMS databases (but in such cases it may be very hard to detect them).

    Hi Robert,
Thank you for your interest in keeping IMS a vital and successful product. Software development has continuously evolved during IMS's lifetime, and so has IMS itself. We have kept pace with, adopted, and implemented many industry standard best practices within our organization, including Continuous Delivery, Design Thinking, and Agile.

When choosing new features to add from the list of requirements in our backlog, we assess which will bring the most value to as many clients as possible and prioritize those.

At this time, after reviewing this request for enhancement and assessing its potential value, we have decided to reject it. The reason we are rejecting RFE 109782 is the following: We are certainly evaluating this item as part of our scalability futures roadmap, however, we don’t feel we can deliver it within the next 18-24 months which is the goal we have set for RFE deliverables as part of our IMS Gold program.. You are welcome to resubmit this RFE at a later date and we will reconsider.

We appreciate your input to IMS, and we hope that you will continue to submit ideas for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of IMS.
    Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Deepak Kohli - deepakk@us.ibm.com

    Hi Robert,

We have kept pace with, adopted, and implemented many industry standard best practices within our organization, including Continuous Delivery, Design Thinking, and Agile.

We are currently reviewing this item for consideration, and we plan to seek additional feedback from other IMS clients. When choosing new features to add from the list of requirements in our backlog, we assess which will bring the most value to as many clients as possible and our ability to deliver within the next 18 months and prioritize those.

You will automatically be notified of ongoing progress associated with this RFE.

    Have a great day!
