DataItem: Add Cobol 88 like symbolic name for the validValues

Hi

In order to get an equivalent syntax/semantic of the Cobol level 88 value, it wold be interesting to add a symbolic name to the valdValues of a DataItem.

In Cobol, one can have
WORKING STORAGE.
01 SEX PIC X(1) VALUE 'M'.
88 MALE VALUE 'M'.
88 FEMALE VALUE 'F'.

PROCEDURE DIVISION.
DEBUT.
SET FEMALE TO TRUE.

IF MALE DISPLAY 'SEX IS MALE'
IF FEMALE DISPLAY 'SEX IS FEMALE'

One can think of having in EGL
dataItem SEX char(1) {
validValues = [
symbolic = MALE, value = "M",
symbolic = FEMALE, value = "Y"
]}
end

(For multiple 88 values, the value could take a list of value instead)

    Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
    Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Programming Languages
    Product - Business Developer

    For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Rational
    Product family - Design & development
    Product - Business Developer

    Hello EGL-developer,
    we are IBM partner and developing Migration tools from RPG and Cobol to EGL. During our work with EGL and application modernization we are also missing strongly the Cobol level-88 construct within EGL.

    We also think it would be much more comfortable to have this functionality as part of the EGL language basics instead of maintaining own library parts for it. Also it would be much easier to convince experienced mainfraim programmers to work with EGL if they could find as many familiarities from good old Cobol within EGL.

    As this RFE was rejected by IBM, should I include a new RFE with this topic?
    kind regards
    Andreas Gronert

    While the suggested enhancement might be more elegant, the equivalent functionality can be coded currently with EGL. It therefore does not have high business value, and is unlikely to have high enough priority to be included a near-term release.
