IBM Z Software

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Have C compile optionally use non deprecated instruction BALR and use BASR

Today if I want to call an assembler program from C it uses BALR. This is deprecated, and I need special code to support it. The compiler needs an option to say "use Branch and save (BASR) instead of BALR"

inline ASM DS incorrect load for long long

With inline ASM to initialize a long long variable using an ASM DS instruction in 31-bit mode, the compiler is only generating an 'L' instruction, which does not load the full 64-bit register representing the long long variable: unsigned long long...

Insufficient inlining for function pointers

The compiler is currently unable to inline a function that is passed to another function as a function pointer parameter. As a result trivial functions may not be inlined when called using a function pointers.

Exception Object Enhance

Exception handle is an important mechanism to help programmers debug their programs. Many of the literature books mention the use of this mechanism to increase the quality of the application. Although C11/C14 has no longer recommend the use of the...

Provide I18N/L10N gettext APIs for XL/C on z/OS

A system level, common, industry standard, platform independent, service is needed to perform internationalization/localization translation services on text strings when running on z/OS. This is needed for both applications compiled to use Languag...

Inline __asm() to communicate ARCHLVL to HLASM for system macros

When a z/OS system macro is embedded in a __asm() block, HLASM assumes ARCHLVL=1 which means the macro will use base+displacement branching, which fails in an inline __asm() block due to "no active USING". Most macros implement a MF=E form which g...

Reliable indicator of AMODE in F7SA chain

When using Metal C, calling an ASCmode=AR function creates an ambiguous F7SA save area (in the DSA chain). The AMODE is switched BEFORE the call (BASR) is executed, and restored AFTER the return, so the AMODE of the caller (and therefore the DSAUS...

z/OS XL C/C++ allow GENASM and __asm without using METAL C

Separate GENASM and METAL C/C++ compiler options and allow calling of operating system services directly from a non-METAL C/C++ program using __asm language extension.

xlc listing files for inline functions incorrect

Found a surprising limitation with xlc listing files for inline functions that are in .h files. The listing for such functions in the PDEF section has a line number like 691 | which doesn't reflect the source line number at the top of that .lst fi...
