This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Z Software products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Enterprise Cobol - INEXIT / PRTEXIT examples and facilities

The INEXIT and PRTEXIT exits make it possible to intervene on the source code read before processing by the compiler, and on the Listing produced by the compiler before restitution.

The Cobol Report Writer component uses these exits: it transforms the input source code to replace component-specific statements into standard COBOL statements before compilation, and it performs the reverse operation after compilation.

We would like to have examples combining these two exits, and we would like the IBM Enterprise Cobol compiler to provide facilities to implement these exits.
For example for INEXIT:
- function of loading an external file in a workspace in memory
- search function in the file loaded in memory
- replacement function in the file loaded in memory
- function of insertion / modification / deletion of lines in the file loaded in memory

    Thanks.
    TYPEDEF is just a sample.

We would especially like to be able to develop a system of "COBOL macros" which is currently lacking in the compiler.

According to us, a "COBOL macro" must be able to inject elements in several places in the source code: the "COBOL macro" is declared in only one place, but during its processing it must inject information in several places (in Working, Procedure...).

A "COBOL macro" can for example perform a function which requires work data: the "COBOL macro" is declared in Procedure, but the work data must be declared in Working.

We are accepting this RFE to add basic examples for INEXIT/PRTEXIT only. In addition, we would like to mention that we will be implementing TYPEDEF which we hope will be useful to you going forward.

This RFE is being investigated further.
